Treatments and Drugs for Cancer - 671 Words

Chemotherapy is a drug, or a variety of different drugs designed to kills cancer cells that have metastasized around the body, shrink primary tumours or slow the growth of tumours (Triggle Hecht, 2010). It is a non-selective cytotoxic drug which target both malignant and normal cells (Craft, Gordon Tiziani, 2011). Radiation and surgery are also treatments, used with chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells in the body (Sugerman, 2013). Chemotherapy is done to shrink a tumour before surgically removing it, or may even be done after surgery to destroy any cancer cells that are left behind (Sugerman, 2013). Nonchemotherapy agents are sometimes administered with chemotherapy, such as antibodies, to help reduce tumour growth (Sugerman, 2013). There are three different types of chemotherapy medications, cell-cycle specific, and cell-cycle nonspecific and hormone-blocking medicines (McKay Schacher, 2009). Cell-cycle specific drugs interfere with the cell division, which does not allow for the cells to divide, causing them to live out the cells life span and die (McKay Schacher, 2009). Cell-cycle nonspecific drugs kill cancer cells at any time during its life span (McKay Schacher, 2009). Hormone-blocking medication make the environment around the cells less hospitable, causing them to slow down and stop the growth of more cancer cells (McKay Schacher, 2009). There are at least 218 different forms of cancer, that the medical system is aware of (Triggle Hecht, 2010).Show MoreRelatedLethal Anti Cancer Drugs And The Treatment Of Treatment1459 Words   |  6 Pagesapproach to the treatment of many tumors (Copra, 2016, pp.1). However, as drug companies such as ours strive to improve conditions with regard to the latter two characteristics, we must face a worsening set of conditions with respect to the first characteristic. The focus of our discussion is on using newly focused ways of fighting cancer cells without attacking their healthy host cells, particularlyRead MorePTEN Essay1274 Words   |  6 PagesThere are several options currently on the market that inhibit PTEN. However, the drug we decided to use will include a molecule known as SF1670. This molecule is highly powerful and specific, allowing us to utilize it in relatively small, yet effective, doses (Author NA, 2013). This particle, when added to the molecular pathway, will inhibit the PTEN molecule, thus allowing the pathway to continue without interruption or modifications. SF1670 was originally developed from a chemical seriesRead MoreSymptoms And Treatment Of Cancer1432 Words   |  6 PagesThe word chemotherapy means the use of any kind of drug to treat a disease, but today, it is most used in a cancer context.
